Stop Snoring Devices

Posted by admin On June - 9 - 2009

Snoring is a common problem in almost one out of every two people and stop snoring remedies have been tried and tested through the years.  Today, there are many stop snoring devices that can help reduce or eliminate this very common problem that not only disrupts the sleep of the snorer at times, but is also disruptive to his or her partner, even to the point of having to sleep in different rooms when both parties feel that the snoring will never stop.

Mouth and Nose

A main reason for a snoring problem is that a person sleeps with his mouth open rather than breathing through his nose. One reason for breathing through the mouth is closed nasal passages.    Common stop snoring devices help the person to breathe out of his nose rather than his mouth.

If allergies are an issue, taking allergy medications at night help to open those passages and allow the person to breathe through his nose.  If allergies are not a problem but the nasal passages still are somewhat closed, there are nasal dilation strips that go across the bridge of the nose and help to hold those passages open during the night.

Stop snoring devices that help a person learn to breathe through his nose are chin straps and mouth sealing devices.  These devices gently hold the mouth shut during the night so that the person is more likely to breathe out of his nose, thus reducing or stopping the snoring problem.  There are also mouth pieces that are specially fitted to a person’s mouth, usually by a dentist, so that the tongue is held into place during the night so that it does not fall back into the throat, blocking the passage of air and causing snoring.

Sleeping Position

For most snorers, they tend to sleep on their backs rather than on their sides.  There are stop snoring devices that help a person to learn to sleep on his side rather than his back.

There are also pillows that are specially made to form to a person’s head and shoulders when sleeping on his side so that it is more comfortable than sleeping on his back.  There are also mattresses that are designed to do the same thing, thus helping to ensure sleeping on the side, keeping the mouth shut and reducing or eliminating the snoring problem.

For those who have the dangerous sleep apnea, which masks itself as a snoring problem, but is really a disorder where the person stops breathing multiple times during the night, there are breathing units such as a continuous positive air pressure or CPAP machine to help them breathe consistently during the night.

If these methods do not work, there are also more extreme measures that can be taken such as surgery which reduce the palate and throat tissue.
