What Types of Snoring are There?

Posted by admin On May - 19 - 2011

Types Of Snoring

There are many different types of snoring and it is a good idea to try and determine your own type of snoring before seeking out the correct solution for it.

Mouth Snoring

Many mouth snorers often breathe mainly through their mouth during the day too. So how can you tell if you are a mouth snorer?

One way is to try and make a snoring noise and then to try again but with the mouth closed. If you can no longer make a snoring noise then you may be a mouth snorer.

The best solution for this type of snoring is to keep your mouth closed with a device such as mouth guard or chin strips.

Tongue Snoring

Some people snore because their tongue sits too far back in their throat while they are asleep. To see if you are a tongue snorer you should first make a snoring noise as usual. Next, try to repeat this while holding your tongue between your teeth. If you cannot, then you may be a tongue snorer.

To solve this problem, the aim is to keep your tongue from falling back into the problematic position. One way is to use a special gum shield that keeps your jaw in a particular position and therefore keeps the tongue under control. This can sometimes also be related to other jaw and teeth problems that your dentist may be aware of and can sometimes complicate a solution to your snoring problems.

Nose Snoring

Some people have problems breathing through their noses. It can often be nothing more than simply anatomy which means that, while asleep, you prefer to breathe through your mouth because your nasal airways are restricted.

The easiest way to remedy this problem is to use nasal strips. These are the same strips that are also used by some athletes. They use two separate layers and an adhesive to pull out the skin on either side of your nose and ensure that you have fully open nasal airways.

Sometimes this problem is caused in the first place by allergies. For example, if you are allergic to house dust then you may only need to change and wash your pillows and pillow cases regularly in order to breathe better through your nose and stop snoring.

Snoring Solutions

Some solutions work equally well for all types of snoring but in most cases you should use the correct aids for your type of snoring. Using the wrong aids can sometimes even make the problem worse. For example, if you are breathing through your mouth due to nasal congestion then wearing a device that keeps the mouth closed will not improve your situation and will probably make it much worse.

The key is to discover the type of snoring you suffer from and then find the most suitable stop snoring products to help you.

Is Stop Snoring Surgery Effective

Posted by admin On May - 7 - 2011

Stop Snoring Surgery

Is it possible that stop snoring surgery can finally be the answer to your snoring troubles? Here we look at some questions you may have about it. How much does it cost and what do you need to be aware of before considering having the surgery?

How Does Stop Snoring Surgery Work?

Clearly, surgery is the last resort to cure any condition. Opening up and making permanent changes to the human body usually has a high succes rate but it does carry with it some real risks (some of which are mentioned below). So how exactly does this type of surgery work?

Uvulopalatoharyngoplasty

This has been the standard procedure in stop snoring surgery for many years and only recently have any alternatives been available.

This procedure involves the removal of any excess tissues at the back of the throat that are contributing to snoring. These tissues contribute to snoring by causing a high pressure constriction in your airway and also by vibrating together in unison. Removal of these tissues solves both problems at once.

This type of surgery is largely effective. Nearly all people report a decrease in snoring symptoms. Approximately half are cured outright and for the rest of their lives. Unfortunately, this means that a high number of people may still experience disruptive levels of snoring.

There are side effects to such surgery. It is normal to have difficulty swallowing in the days immediately following surgery. In the long term, most people do not have any lasting side effects. However, some will experience scarring, pain/other discomfort and even a change in their voice.

Other stop snoring Surgery Procedures

As uvulopalatoharyngoplasty carries real risks and is far from an ideal treatment, other surgical methods have recently evolved and are now in wide use.

In laser-assisted uvulopalatoplasty, the uvula and the soft palate are amended using a laser. Although it is certainly more economical than uvulopalatoharyngoplasty, the jury is out on whether this method has a higher success rate or fewer long term side effects.

Another surgical innovation is radio frequency tissue ablation. It can be used to alter the shape and tone of the uvula or even to help free up a blocked nose. Side effects are minimal and this treatment does not require a general anaesthetic.

Costs of Stop Snoring Surgery

The costs of all the above treatments vary widely and depend on the amount of work that needs doing. As an indication only, these procedures vary between $500 and $2,000.

Stop snoring surgery is probably the last resort for most people. However, although not guaranteed to work every time, it is effective in many cases.

Could a stop snoring spray be the remedy you’ve been seeking that will ultimately offer you and your long-suffering partner the much needed good quality sleep you’ve both been searching for? Can something as simple as a few sprays nightly really cure the large condition of snoring?

How a Stop Snoring Spray Works

The stop snoring spray was designed to be sprayed before falling asleep. It lubricates the soft tissues in the back of the throat so they really will not vibrate, temporarily at least. Quite a few of these type of sprays also contain anti-inflammatory ingredients that keep the airways open.

What Are The Ingredients of a Stop Snoring Spray?

stop snoring sprays are thoroughly natural and made primarily from essential oils. It’s those oils that supply the temporary lubrication that helps prevent the soft tissues vibrating.

Some of these oils are menthol in nature and considered to be best for the airways in terms of snoring while there is no proper scientific evidence to support this declaration. Do not be affected by extravagant descriptions of ingredients. As an example, you could possibly see the ingredient Citrus limonum however, you should be aware that it is just oil taken from lemon.

Using a Stop Snoring Spray

With most anti snoring sprays simply spray three sprays towards the back of the mouth (including the roof of one’s mouth) and the effects will usually continue for hours while you are asleep.

With some sprays you are also supposed to squirt some of the liquid up your nose. This is uncomfortable initially however, you can get used to it. The idea with such sprays is to also keep your nasal airway clear and prevent it blocking which itself is among the three main factors behind snoring.

Many people report a little stinging sensation but this often disappears after a couple of nights. Typically, a bottle lasts between four and about six weeks.

How Much Should a Stop Snoring Spray Cost You?

Stop snoring spray is probably the most affordable of most anti-snoring aids and costs around $10 for any six week bottle. Due to its low cost, many individuals apply it as their first attempt to treat their snoring. It is generally a much cheaper option than nasal strips or mouth guards/mouthpieces.

So we would recommend a stop snoring spray as one of your first attempts to treat the condition. If it has little or no effect then you can move on to try some other stop snoring products. Eventually you should find a suitable treatment that works well for your particular circumstances.

Types of Stop Snoring Pills

Posted by admin On April - 16 - 2011

Stop Snoring Pills come in a variety of forms from prescribed drugs taregeting specific underlying medical problems to natural herbal remedies and homeopathic medicine.

Stop snoring pills sound like an ideal way to cure yourself of your snoring problem that is disrupting not only your ability to get a good night’s quality sleep but also that of your partner’s. Here are a few ways that a pill might be able to help you cure your snoring problem.

Drugs to Stop Snoring

Snoring is a complex problem and there are many underlying reasons for it. Therefore, there is no single drug that can target “snoring” and cure it. Instead, there are some drugs that can help address the underlying causes. For example, antihistamines and corticosteroids can help prevent inflammation and constriction of the airways that occurs when someone has an allergic reaction to house dust, mites or pollen. This allows the nasal airways to remain well open and prevents snoring that is caused by this.

“Natural” Pills to stop snoring

There are a number of non-drug alternatives available on the market that some people have reported works well for them. However, I advise caution as there are no clinical studies that prove them to be effective.

First, there are a number of herbal pills out there that claim to stop snoring. These are made mainly from natural herbs and plant enzymes and are supposed to prevent the tissues of the airways from swelling or becoming inflamed.

There are also some homeopathic remedies available that are supposed to work against snoring. Like other homeopathic remedies, these are the source of much argument between those who say that they work and others who say that there is little evidence that they do.

Alternatives to Stop Snoring Pills

Ultimately, few people use pills to stop snoring. Instead, they seek other, more generally reliable methods. One drug option that does work is the stop snoring spray. This works to prevent the soft tissues at the back of the throat from vibrating due to friction against each other.

Otherwise, people report the most success with one or more of a variety of other anti-snoring aids. For example, a specially designed and hypoallergenic pillow, a mouthpiece/gum shield that is appropriate for their type of snoring or devices like my snoring solution. Even surgery can be successful but is usually only advised for the most serious of cases.

Remember, the complications of snoring such as sleep apnoea can be potentially life threatening. Do not ignore your snoring problem for too long or leave it too late. You normally find that snoring is treatable by one or other of the stop snoring products available.

Stop Snoring Pillow

Posted by admin On April - 7 - 2011

What does the stop snoring pillow do? A stop snoring pillow (sometimes also called a “sleep apnoea pillow”) is designed to help you stop snoring in bed without the assistance of any other anti-snoring aids.

How Does the Stop Snoring Pillow Work?

There are different types of  the stop snoring pillow and they work in many different ways.

First of all, it is manufactured from memory foam. This material retains its shaped after being deformed. Such a pillow would not even be possible with a regular goose down or similar traditional pillow. Many people are also allergic to regular pillows and this causes the nasal airways to become constricted and therefore causes snoring. A foam pillow is generally hypoallergenic and helps to prevent this.

Secondly, the primary way in which most of these stop snoring pillows work is by encouraging an optimum jaw position if you are lying on your back. Most snoring occurs while people are lying on their backs and their jaws fall into a position where the airflow becomes restricted. A stop snoring pillow encourages your jaw to avoid this position and you therefore avoid snoring at the same time.

Some pillows actually discourage you from sleeping on your back at all. They seem to follow the same principle as the old method of sewing a tennis ball into the back of your pyjamas so that you can only sleep on your side. These are not preferred by those who prefer to lie on their back, at least some of the time.

Recent Advances of the Stop Snoring Pillow

Recently the Japanese have created what is perhaps the best stop snoring pillow currently available. It detects when you start to snore and rouses you with a series of vibrations.

These vibrations are not intense or loud enough to cause you or your partner to wake up fully. Instead, they will gently rouse you enough so that you simply roll over and change your sleeping position and hence stop snoring.

Alternatives to the Stop Snoring Pillow

The stop snoring pillow is just one method of stopping snoring. By far the best advice is to lose a little weight as this will lessen the amount of soft tissue in the airways that contribute to snoring. Other good anti-snoring aids that you may experience varying levels of success with include drugs, injections, strips and mouthpieces.

The stop snoring pillow is a good idea to help prevent snoring. Lots of people find them extremely beneficial in preventing snoring. It is certainly well worth looking at the different types of stop snoring pillow that are available to you and trying one out as it may well be exactly what you need.

Is a Stop Snoring Mouthpiece a Good Way to Prevent Snoring

Posted by admin On March - 28 - 2011

stop snoring Mouthpiece

What is a stop snoring mouthpiece and how can it help you to stop snoring? Does it work effectively and how does it stack up against the alternatives?

What Is A Stop Snoring Mouthpiece?

The name of this device is mostly self explanatory. It is a device intended to be worn in the mouth while you sleep and therefore prevent snoring. This is important because snoring not only keeps your partner away but can also be implicated in sleep apnoea, a potentially life threatening condition.

How Does a Stop Snoring It Work?

No two mouthpieces are the same and each manufacturer has developed their own design. However, most of them look like a two-piece gum shield.

They work by keeping your jaw in a particular position and preventing it from moving in such a way that your airway would otherwise become constricted.

By keeping your airway well open, the pressure there is reduced and any soft tissues are prevented from rubbing together or vibrating. Hence, your snoring is prevented.

Is a Stop Snoring Mouthpiece Effective?

Stop snoring mouthpieces are generally very effective and work for most people.

Your experience will differ depending on which model you obtain. For example, some models lock the jaw in place while others allow you some opening and closing movement. Some prevent you from breathing via your mouth while others feature small breathing apertures. Some feel fairly rigid while others have some give and are generally considered more comfortable to wear.

Despite all the above differences, most stop snoring mouthpieces are effective for most people. The only real way to know is to try one out.

Previously it was only possible to obtain one via your dentist who would do a professional fitting. These versions do not necessarily give a better fit or even last longer than home use devices. I recommend saving a few hundred bucks and just purchasing a home use model.

Also, some people report that they simply cannot persist with the use of a stop snoring mouthpiece. They find it very difficult to sleep with a device in their mouth and/or worry about swallowing it in their sleep. While such a fear is unfounded, it is probably better to seek an alternative in such cases.

The Stop Snoring Mouthpiece Alternatives

There are many alternatives available to the snorer such as special pillows, pills, nose strips and even injections. However, because the stop snoring mouthpiece is a relatively cheap investment, it is generally worth trying one out early on to see if it will work for you and whether or not you need to seek any of the other alternative stop snoring products available to prevent snoring.

Stop Snoring Injection

Posted by admin On March - 20 - 2011

Here we’ll consider the use of a stop snoring injection, also known as injection snoreplasty, to prevent snoring. Is it possible that something as simple as a stop snoring injection cure you for good of your annoying snoring?

What Is The Stop Snoring Injection?

If you have heard only the name but little else about this treatment then you could be forgiven for thinking that this is taken as a jab in the upper arm, like a vaccination. The stop snoring injection is actually injected into your uvula, the soft and flappy piece of flesh at the back of your throat. This procedure is also known as injection snoreplasty.

How Does It Work?

Your uvula is injected under local anaesthetic and there is no need to put you to sleep. The chemical that is injected is one that has previously been used for treatment of varicose veins. It is not approved for use against snoring so this is considered “off-label” treatment.

The chemical works by stiffening whatever it is injected to. This is a medical process better known as sclerosis (such as in arteriosclerosis or multiple sclerosis). In this case, the uvula stiffens and no longer flaps and vibrates as it used to do. Hence, you no longer snore.

Success Rate?

Very little is known so far about the stop snoring injection. Studies that have been done so far look promising but the sample sizes are very small so the treatment is far from conclusive.

At this early stage, it appears that the majority of patients report a cessation of their snoring. The treatment appears to be far from permanent but, nevertheless, a repeat treatment appears to re-harden the tissue once more and gives further relief for the snorer. So far, this treatment is not recommended for those patients who have developed sleep apnoea as it is unlikely to be successful. If surgery is desired in order to treat sleep apnoea, a more radical procedure is necessary.

Cost

Although the raw materials for this treatment are very cheap at around $5 to $10, you can expect to pay closer to $200 to $300 for treatment and aftercare by a qualified medical professional.

Conclusion

The stop snoring injection is an alternative treatment that has relatively recently been developed. It is not currently widely used and caution should be exercised until further studies confirm its effectiveness and whether this can be maintained long term. There are of course other tried and tested stop snoring products available.

Snoring Nose Strips

Posted by admin On March - 12 - 2011

This post is about Snoring Nose Strips. It tells you how they work, if they are effective and also looks at the alternatives. Snoring nose strips are just one of a plethora of anti-snoring aids out on the market today that could potentially give you and your partner much needed relief from snoring.

How Do Snoring Nose Strips Work?

Snoring nose strips resemble a plaster or a band-aid used for dressing a fresh cut. They contain flexible bands that mean that after you apply a strip and remove the pressure of your fingers from it, the outer walls of your nostrils will be pulled outwards and hence your nasal airway is opened up.

How Does This Help Snoring?

Snoring generally is caused when there is a restriction of airflow. When this happens, the air pressure increases.

Imagine for a moment a garden hose. When it is stepped on, the flow of the water increases.

The same thing happens in someone who has a blocked or partially blocked nose. The air pressure will increase which contributes to snoring. Restricted air flow in the nose will also make the mouth more likely to open, again contributing to snoring.

Are Snoring Nose Strips Effective?

They are highly effective for people who suffer from “nose snoring” i.e. snoring due to a constriction in the nasal airway. If you suffer from throat or mouth snoring then they could even make your problem worse.

What Are The Alternatives to Snoring Nose Strips?

If you suffer from a different types of snoring then you should definitely look at other methods. Often, a special retainer/mouth guard can be highly effective. Most people report that it takes them only a day or two to get used to wearing one at night and then after that there is no problem.

Anti-snoring spray is effective but only temporarily and must be used each night. The spray does nothing more than to lubricate the soft tissues which would otherwise vibrate.

Preventing Nasal Congestion

If strips have the potential to help you (i.e. you have a blocked nose) then you should also consider trying to prevent your nasal congestion in the first place. Often, such blockages are brought about by allergies to pollen, house dust or other allergens so such triggers are definitely worth the effort of trying to eliminate them from your life.

More radical steps such as surgery are available but the success rate is not particularly high so you should exhaust all other alternatives first.

Certainly snoring nose strips are a good option to try. Although they are not useful in all cases in many cases they can be highly effective in preventing snoring.

What is Sleep Apnoea: Diagnosis and Treatment

Posted by admin On March - 3 - 2011

Sleep Apnoea

Sleep apnoea is thought to be as prevalent in society as asthma and yet by comparison is usually undiagnosed. This condition presents a growing healthcare crisis as untreated sleep apnoea carries the real risk of premature death from cardiovascular disease, stroke, heart failure and accidents (e.g. at the wheel). Fortunately, if diagnosed correctly, there are many highly effective treatments available.

What Is Sleep Apnoea?

Apnoeas are suspensions of a person’s breathing. When these occur during sleep then the condition is called sleep apnoea.

The occasional apnoea is nothing to worry about. The condition of sleep apnoea is confirmed according to a standard definition that includes the number of pauses in breathing as well as changes in brain activity and blood oxygen levels.

How Is Sleep ApnoeaDiagnosed?

Most people with sleep apnoea are never diagnosed because they rarely realise that they have it. They may have symptoms of tiredness, headaches, sexual dysfunction and more but many people often put these down to stress or partying too hard.

Often, a person’s partner will tell them that they are having apnoeas and to see a doctor. Thereafter, a doctor who suspects apnoea will refer the patient for a sleep study where a night of sleep is studied in detail by researchers who observe and collect relevant data. Only then can a diagnosis of sleep apnoea be positively confirmed.

Types Of Sleep Apnoea

There are generally two types of sleep apnoea.

The first type, obstructive sleep apnoea, is the most common. It is caused by an obstruction in the airway that occurs when a person is asleep. The obstruction itself is formed by the various soft tissues at the back of the throat, especially when in specific positions such as lying on the back. It is much more common in overweight people who are of middle-age or beyond.

The second type is known as central sleep apnoea and represents only 0.4% of all cases. With this condition, the patient does not have a restricted airway but instead there is a neurological problem. Under normal circumstances, the body monitors levels of oxygen and carbon dioxide and regulates the breathing accordingly. In central sleep apnoea, this process does not work as it should and as a result, patients experience apnoeas where no effort is made to breathe.

Treatment for Sleep Apnoea

Many anti-snoring treatments that work by opening up the airways can work well for obstructive sleep apnoea. Otherwise, the gold standard in treatment for sleep apnoea is the continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) device. This forces air into the throat on the inhale and ensures that the body receives enough oxygen.

Sleep apnoea, once diagnosed, is treatable, so if it is suspected it is important to get it checked out.
