Position Yourself to Snore Less

Posted by admin On February - 27 - 2010

If you have a difficult time with snoring at night, you might be surprised to find out that you may be able to cut down on the amount that your snoring by changing the position in which you sleep. The reason why this is the case is because we often snore because the soft tissues in the back of our throat relaxes and begisn to obstruct our airways in some way or another. This can not only cause us to snore but it may also cause a more serious problem, known as sleep apnea. In order to overcome this problem, one of the easier ways that we can approach the situation is by changing the position in which we sleep.

Many of us that have a difficult time with snoring and sleep apnea tend to sleep on our backs or at least towards our back, if we sleep on our side. There’s no doubt that this is one of the more comfortable ways to sleep and we tend to condition ourselves to sleep in this way because we feel that we are opening the air passages more and breathing easier. If we stop breathing on occasion because of sleep apnea, sleeping on our back can make us feel as if we can breathe but it is often a false sense of security.

One of the best ways for you to approach the situation is by teaching yourself how to sleep on your side or on your stomach. This may be a bit difficult and many people are not willing to try because they don’t think that they will be able to sleep in any other position than on their back. It is thought that it takes up to 30 days to start a new habit so you need to make sure that you’re giving yourself enough time to learn how to sleep properly without sleeping on your back.

If you find that you are constantly rolling over onto your back whenever you are sleeping, even if you try to sleep on your stomach or side, you may need to block the approach in one way or another. Try lining pillows up behind yourself in order to stop you from rolling over onto your back. It may just help you to be aware of this, even though you are sleeping and it will remind you to stay on your stomach. Give it a try for a week or two, you might be surprised to find out that positioning yourself properly can help you to stop snoring.

Do Nasal Strips Really Help with Snoring?

Posted by admin On February - 21 - 2010

There are a lot of different things that promise to help us with our snoring and some of them work quite nicely while others only really scratch the surface. One of the things that has come along in recent years which claims to help with snoring are nasal strips. These really didn’t come out in order to help people with snoring, they really came out in order to help athletes to be able to breathe better whenever they are on the field. Some people have claimed, however, that they help with snoring to a large degree. What is the truth behind nasal strips and snoring?

The fact of the matter is, we may snore for different reasons. Some of us snore because the soft tissue in our throat becomes relaxed and blocks our air passages. Others of us may snore because we have a difficult time breathing through our nose at night. The reason why I’m saying this is because it really depends on why you are snoring in the first place as to whether the nasal strips will have an effect on the amount that you snore or not.

If you tend to be one of those that has a difficult time sleeping with their mouth closed at night because your sinuses get clogged, you might find some significant relief by using nasal strips. It certainly is worth trying, especially if you find that you’re waking up with a dry mouth in the morning and clogged sinuses. You may also be able to find additional relief by using a saline nasal spray regularly along with wearing the nasal strips. A combination between these two different things may be all the help that you really need in order to overcome snoring completely.

The best way for you to find out if nasal strips are going to help you with your snoring or not is to purchase a pack of them and try it for yourself. You can pick them up at the drugstore for just a couple of dollars and regardless of whether they help you with your snoring or not, they’re certainly going to help you with your breathing. Sometimes, it is necessary for us to figure out why we are snoring through a process of elimination. If the nasal strips do not help, you will realize that you need to find another cure for your snoring problem.

A Spray to Stop Your Snoring

Posted by admin On January - 23 - 2010

If you have a problem with snoring or if you know somebody that has a problem with snoring, you might be surprised to learn that there is a natural spray that can help them to overcome the problem. I’m sure that you have recognized with your own snoring that you often wake up with a dry throat and mouth. You might be surprised to learn that this dryness may not be a result of the snoring but may actually be part of the cause. Let’s take a look at some common sprays that you can use in order to help overcome the problem.

Many of us become mouth breathers at night and this causes a lot of problems with snoring. If you find that your nose is becoming stuffed up during the night and it is causing you to breathe through your mouth, you might want to consider using a saline spray up your nostrils on a nightly basis. Many people find that this is a rather pleasant sensation after they begin using it but most are typically apprehensive because they feel that it is going to be uncomfortable. If you use it regularly, it will help to keep the lining of your nasal passages and your sinuses moist which will do more than just help you with your snoring problems. It may also help you to avoid colds which is something that all of us certainly would look forward to.

There are also some commercial products that are available on the market that are homeopathic and made from all-natural products. These also come in the form of a spray but instead of spraying them up your nose as you would with a saline solution, they are sprayed directly into the mouth and in the area of the throat. The natural products that they contain help to coat and soothe this area and can reduce the amount of snoring that you are doing quite dramatically. You may also be able to make your self a homeopathic spray to help reduce some of the symptoms associated with snoring but it is typically easier for you to just buy one of these commercial products. Most people find that after using one of these products for just a couple of nights, they are able to get a much better night’s sleep and so are those who have to listen to them.

Stop Snoring With These Treatments

Posted by admin On July - 7 - 2009

The range of treatments to cease snoring are almost limitless. From over the counter cures to easy, natural remedies to easy, natural cures for snoring, to pricey surgical procedures, there is a treatment to stop snoring to suit This article will look at some of the products available from consultant outlets that you will not find at your local drugstore, but which are less expensive than laser surgery or implants.

The Adkins Snoring Aid

The Adkins Snoring help is a English made product that proscribes excess airflow to help the wearer stop snoring. The treatment involves plugging the nostrils with 2 little plastic balls held along with a clip, thus forcing the user to peathe thru the mouth instead. This could seem like a counterintuitive approach, given that mouth peathing is mostly the reason for snoring, but in a few cases, it is actually due to vipations in the back of the nose. There is a simple test to see whether the Adkins Snoring help is the correct treatment to cease snoring. If your other half is snoring, pinch his or her nose for a few seconds. If he stops stops snoring, the Adkins Snoring help could be just the right product. Don’t forget to drink a pitcher of water before you retire to bed, as it can infrequently result in dry mouth in the morning.

Humidifiers

Most people wouldn’t think about humidifiers as a treatment to cease snoring, but often snoring can be the results of excessive dryness in the throat and mouth. Humidifying the atmosphere can help to lupicate the throat and so stop snoring. Vicks even makes a version of its favored Vaporub product particularly for humidifiers, a liquid that you mix with the water to provide a mentholated steam that treats the nasal congestion which may also be a cause of snoring.

Anti-snoring pillows

Special pillows may also be used as a treatment to cease snoring. These pillows are hypoallergenic, and so don’t harbor mold, mould or other allergens that may cause breathing infections. They are designed to position the head properly, so that the airways are not obstructed. This involves keeping the jaw away from the chest and preventing the jaw from slackening. The head and neck are kept in an optimal position, with the jaw forward. The pillow works whether you are sleeping on your back, your side or your belly significant, since the average sleeper changes position 50 times a night. By guaranteeing the sleeper is always in an optimal position, the pillows not only stop snoring, but also help calm sleep, permitting the user to awake refreshed the following morning.

Some New Treatments For Snoring

Posted by admin On July - 5 - 2009

There are always new treatments for snoring coming onto the market. In this article, we intend to take a glance at a few of the latest.

Somnoplasty

Somnoplasty is a new treatment for snoring like laser surgery, in that it acts to reshape the parts of the throat that lead to snoring. It uses low frequency radio waves to cause abrasions to form underneath the mucous liner of the uvula and soft palate. These wounds finally get reabsorbed into the soft tissue causing it stiffen. The tissue then vipates less, meaning that snoring is reduced or eliminated. The treatment is performed in an outpatient setting, and takes around 30 mins. The sole side effect is a slight swelling in the back of the throat, which may basically increase snoring in the short term. The patient is monitored 6 to eight weeks after the process to determine if the treatment has stopped snoring successfully. If not, a second somnoplasty could be performed.

Pillar Procedure

Another new treatment for snoring, recently developed by a Minnesota company, is regarded as the Pillar Procedure. It involves three tiny implants made from woven polyester being inserted into the soft palate. These perform much the same function as the wounds made by somnoplasty, causing the palate to stiffen. It only works in situations where vipations of the palate are the only reason for snoring. Where other factors are involved, the patient may require further treatment to stop snoring. Side effects are restricted to minor discomfort for a day or 2 after surgery, during which time soft foods only are recommended, and hot drinks should be avoided. Occasionally, the implants are defied by the body. In such cases, they can be removed quickly and painlessly.

Sinus Turbinate Surgery

The final new treatment for snoring that we’ll look at in this article involves keyhole surgery on the sinuses to treat a blocked nose. Lasers or acid cut back the fleshy ridges at the entrance to the sinuses, known as turbinates, and the lasers can also correct a deviated septum. This is a high-risk process, as the turbinates perform a urgent function in controlling airflow to the sinuses. Care must be taken not to get rid of too much tissue, as they’re covered in the small hairs known as cilia, which help filter out impurities and microbes in the air. A loss of cilia can reduce your protection from airborne sicknesses like colds and influenza. A good surgeon, will make sure that exactly the right amount of the turbinates are removed.

Over-the-Counter Snoring Treatments

Posted by admin On June - 30 - 2009

There are all sorts of treatments for snoring available, from straightforward over the counter remedies available from any drugstore, to more specialized snoring treatments such as chin straps, to costly laser procedures. In this article, we may target those snoring treatments that you can buy at your local pharmacy or supermarket pharmacy.

Why Does My Snoring Even Need Treatment?

Quite aside from keeping your other half or partner awake, snoring can have negative effects on your own health. As well as being a result of sleep apnea ( an interruption of peathing during sleep), it could also cause it, thus depriving the body of imperative oxygen. It has also been linked to diabetes, coronary problems and high blood pressure. Sleep deprivation caused by snoring can also lead to exhaustion, irritation and loss of focus the following day. If you snore, it’s essential that your snoring receives treatment as soon as possible.

Shopping for Snoring Treatments

Snoring treatments stocked in shops fall into 3 classes : nasal strips, throat sprays and electronic devices. Let’s look at each of these in turn.

Nasal strips were developed by Bruce Johnson, creator of the Breathe Right strip. They usually come in regular or mentholated varieties, the latter being impregnated with menthol to release decongestant fumes when scratched, and in tiny or enormous sizes to fit different sizes of nose. They work by opening up the air passages in the nose, which can become blocked by nasal congestion, in order to allow easier peathing.

Throat sprays contain a mix of natural oils built to lupicate throat tissue. They work on the surfaces in the back of the throat, which can become dry and vipate, causing snoring. The spray shrinks and tightens the mempane, therefore stopping snoring at its source. More recently, the same mix of oils has become available in liquid form, which you gargle with before heading off to bed, and throat strips, which you place on your tongue and allow to dissolve, coating the back of the throat with the oils contained in the throat strip. All these products can be mixed with the nasal strips to offer a two-pronged assault on the reasons behind snoring.

Electronic anti-snoring devices are worn on the wrist, attached to the skin by electrodes, and work by employing sensors to detect snoring. When snoring is detected, the electronic device emits a heart beat of energy that triggers a reflex action, either a tightening of the throat muscles or a change in position to one that makes it better to breathe.

Lasers in Snoring Treatments

Posted by admin On June - 27 - 2009

For the general public, snoring is simply a bother. Except for a couple it can end up in obstructive sleep apnea, where loud snoring is interrupted by periods where peathing stops completely. This is a major condition and can even be lethal in a few cases. Luckily, a new treatment for snoring is now available, which uses lasers to treat this syndrome. This laser snoring treatment, known as LAUP, which stands for Laser aided Uvulo Palatoplasty, is intended to trim and reshape the uvula and soft palate.

What Occurs During Laser Snoring Treatment?

After a local anesthetic, Lidocaine, is applied, CO2 lasers are used to make two incisions in the soft palate, and then to vaporise conscientiously selected parts of the uvula and palate while the patient is seated upright in an examination chair, completely awake. The process is painless and takes about ten mins for each operation. The full laser snoring treatment occurs over one to five sessions, spaced around four weeks apart.

Advantages and Downsides of Laser Snoring Treatment

Because the laser snoring treatment is carried out with microscopic precision and at awfully high temperatures, there’s little, if any, bleeding. Agony is kept to a minimum, though the patient might have a sore throat and swallowing could be painful for a week to ten days after each process, though this could be dealt with with steady, over the counter sore throat medicine. Occasionally, a brief voice change may occur. The success rate is high, over ninety p.c, with the bulk of patients seeing a reduction or even the complete elimination of snoring after only two sessions.

The main drawback of laser snoring treatment is the pricetag, around $500 per procedure, and an analysis fee. Many insurance carriers will not cover the price tag excepting in-patient treatment carried out in a hospital in very severe cases of sleep apnea, where the medical necessity for laser snoring treatment has been established.

Relapses After Laser Snoring Treatment

A study carried out in Canterbury, England on patients two years after laser snoring treatment found that, as with other laser treatments, there was a relapse in some patients. The survey found a relapse rate of twenty-two p.c in patients who has shown success half a year after being treated. In addition, the heat from the lasers could often bring about a narrowing of the airways and fiposis of the palate, leading to the sleep apnea being worse than it was before the treatment. These contributors need to be considered when thinking about laser snoring treatment.

Chin Straps as a Snoring Treatment

Posted by admin On June - 22 - 2009

Need something a little stronger than an OTC medication but do not have the money for a costly laser snoring treatment? There are many intermediate options available. In this article, we’re going to look at the uses of chin straps as a snoring treatment.

About the Snoring Treatment Chin Strap

The snoring treatment chin strap was invented in 2001 in the UK and approved by the FDA in 2004. Since that point, over 4 million jaw straps have been sold. They consist of a soft pad which goes under the jaw, and which is held there by an elastic band type strap that goes around the head. The chin strap works by holding the mouth closed to make sure that the user peathes thru their nose. They are generally employed by older folk, since the jaw muscles slacken as we get older, causing the mouth to fall open when we sleep.

Controversies Concerning the Snoring Treatment Chin Strap

There have been beefs the snoring treatment chin strap is not as sturdy as it should be. Online product reviews report the straps topping after only a few months. Given the fact that the straps are non-returnable due to cleanliness issues, with the manufacturers being unwilling to replace a used strap, some users believe that they are not worth the money they paid for them. However, it should be observed that other reviewers voiced complete satisfaction with the chin straps, some saying that it had worked where all of the treatments had failed. Newer pands of snoring treatment chin strap replace the elastic band with 2 fapic straps held together with Velcro, which eliminates this problem altogether, while making certain that one size of strap fits any size of head, the same way that the elastic band does.

Medical Research on Snoring Treatment Chin Straps

Clinical trials were carried out on the snoring treatment chin strap at Helsinki School Central Infirmary in Finland in 2003. 15 patients were tested for 2 consecutive nights, one with a chin strap and one without, and their REM, blood oxygen levels and airflow, both nasal and oral, were measured. In addition, the heads of 6 patients, selected at random, were measured using 3D imaging devices. The study concluded that the chin straps could perform a valuable function in inflating nasal airflow and reducing mouth dryness in some patients, though in some rare cases, it basically made the snoring worse and could even increase sleep apnea. The researchers suggested users to take these possible complications into account before using the snoring treatment chin strap on a constant basis.

Snoring Treatment Review

Posted by admin On June - 11 - 2009

The online store Walgreens drugstores, give people the opportunity to review their products including snoring treatments. Of the anti-snoring products offered, Breathe Right strips scored the highest, with most users reporting satisfactory results, though a few complained of difficulty getting the strips to stay attached properly. Anti-snoring throat sprays scored less well, with one user saying that the results lasted less than ten minutes. Snoring treatment reviews for electronic devices for stopping snoring have not been reviewed at Walgreens.com or, anywhere else, therefore if you do buy them it will be at your own risk.

Surgical Snoring Treatments: A Clinical Review

When considering surgery to help stop snoring, it is wise not only to read up on snoring treatments reviews but also look into clinical trials. The US National Institutes of Health carried out a clinical trial of both Laser Assisted Uvulo Palatoplasty (LAUP) and radiofrequency treatment, to determine which was more effective in the treatment of snoring and sleep apnea. The trial was carried out at Taichung Veterans General Hospital in Taiwan on 40 healthy volunteers, both male and female, in the fall of 2005 (apparently, even the US government is outsourcing to China now!). From the study it found that LAUP achieved better results in eliminating snoring, however, radiofrequency treatment was a better option for less post-operative discomfort.

At the University of Cincinnati, Ear, Nose and Throat specialists have also carried out a review of Pillar Implants on behalf of their manufacturer, Restore Medical Inc. however the results are not available yet.

Natural Snoring Treatment Reviews

Because scientific establishments do not think that herbal and other alternative remedies warrant the same testing as other treatments, snoring treatment reviews in this area are hard to find. Home remedies are generally handed down among families and friends, rather than being recommended by doctors. Nearly everyone has some sort of remedy that they swear by, and it is hard to evaluate how much is true and how much is just down to the placebo effect. However, on the positive side, there are few, if any, reports of anybody actually being harmed by an herbal remedy.

Natural Treatments for Snoring

Posted by admin On June - 10 - 2009

If you want to stop snoring you do not have to resort to surgery or chemicals. People who wish to stay away from medical or pharmaceutical treatments may look towards natural treatments for snoring.

Lifestyle Change is a Natural Treatment for Snoring

An unhealthy lifestyle leads to snoring, therefore changing this will mean that snoring could stop. Being overweight can lead to an increase in the amount of fatty tissue around your neck, which in turn can cause snoring. A natural treatment for snoring would be to lose 10 per cent of you body weight. This will be a step towards stopping snoring.

Another cause of snoring is alcohol. It acts as a depressant causing the muscles in the back of your throat to collapse more rapidly than they normally do whilst sleeping. It also irritates the nasal passages. Avoid drinking alcohol for at least four hours before you go to bed if you want to avoid snoring. A natural treatment for snoring would be to avoid sleeping pills and antihistamines as they have similar effects as alcohol therefore eliminating these will also help to eliminate snoring.

Try switching to dairy free alternatives to that warm, milky drink at bedtime, such as soy, rice or almond milk. The reason for this change is because dairy products can increase the production of mucus, which can lead to nasal congestion.

An important factor of snoring is posture. Snoring usually occurs when a person is lying on his or her back. Some people resort to sewing a tennis ball into the backs of their pajamas in order to ensure that they sleep on their sides. It can also be helpful to raise the head of your mattress four inches or so by placing a block underneath it. Because of this it clears the airways because the head is lifted while sleeping.

Other Natural Treatments for Snoring

Despite the natural treatments for snoring mentioned above, it is not enough to stop snoring. But if you still don’t like the idea of putting chemicals into your body, have no fear. A wide range of natural treatments for snoring are available at health food stores, drugstores and supermarkets. Tissue salts containing calcium sulfate,  magnesium phosphate and calcium phosphate can promote healthy sleep patterns that reduce or eliminate snoring. Herbal remedies that relax the body include extract of wild oats (Avena sativa), blue skullcap (Scuttelaria lateriflora) and maypop, also known as purple passionflower (Passiflora incarnata). These do not appear to have the harmful effects of artificial sedatives, which can actually promote snoring. Ordinary household ginger (Zingiber officinale) can help to produce saliva, which then lubricates the throat and palate, this works even more if mixed with honey.
Even though you might be planning to use a natural treatment for snoring it is still important to consult this with your doctor.
