Why Weight Makes You Snore – and How to Fix It

Posted by admin On March - 28 - 2010

There are a number of different reasons why we snore and you might be surprised to learn that almost everybody snores on occasion. There are some of us, however, that tend to snore so loudly and so often that the situation almost becomes chronic. It is not only difficult for those of us who are dealing with snoring because it affects our sleep but it is also difficult for anybody that has to sleep with us. You might be surprised to learn that excess weight on your body is one of the top causes of snoring. Not that the weight causes the snoring but it irritates the situation that exists in many of us.

Snoring is often caused because we either have excess tissue in the area of our throat which blocks our breathing and vibrates or because our throat is being blocked by another issue, such as with our tongue. If we are carrying around excess weight, we will typically have a much more difficult time breathing, both during the day and the specially at night. The weight does not necessarily cause us to snore but it does irritate an existing situation and causes us to snore more.

If we find that we are snoring regularly and we are carrying around additional weight on our body, the only real solution that we have is to lose the weight that we are carrying around. This is typically done through a combination of diet and exercise. Although it certainly is possible for you to lose weight and stop snoring quickly as a result of going on a faddish diet, the results will not typically be long-term. If you want to overcome your snoring problem and lose the weight permanently, you need to go about it systematically and logically.

All of us burn calories for fuel and if we are taking in enough calories during the day, that is what our body is going to use in order to get the energy that it needs. If we reduce our calorie intake with our diet or increase our calorie burn through exercise, we will end up with a calorie deficit at the end of the day. This is truly one of the only ways for you to lose weight safely and permanently. It may take a couple of weeks for you to notice a difference but once you begin losing the weight consistently, the snoring will begin to get better as well.

4 Common Allergies That Make You Snore

Posted by admin On March - 21 - 2010

Do you have a problem with snoring? You might be surprised to find out that it is coming from a problem with allergies. Even if you do not typically have allergic reactions, they can show up during the night whenever we are breathing more deeply. Here are the four most common allergies that cause snoring problems for us. Getting rid of the source of the problem is typically the best way for you to overcome your snoring problem, once and for all.

Pet Dander – Allergic reactions to pets are far more common than most people think. Even if you do not typically have a difficult time with your animals, deeply breathing at night can cause you to snore as a result of an allergic reaction. Remove the pet from your bedroom and buy an air filter. This will help with snoring problems in most cases.

Pollen – Most people realize that they have some problems with pollen allergies but few of them make that connection between this type of allergen and snoring. During the day, our hair acts as a magnet for this type of pollen and if we don’t wash our hair before bedtime, it can be transferred to the pillow. This can make for a very difficult night of sleep as we breathe the pollen in from the pillow slip.

Creams – Many of us apply creams and lotions before going to bed in order to help with our skin. If we are doing this on our own skin or if somebody that we sleep with is doing this, it may cause an allergic reaction. The easiest way for you to test for this type of allergic reaction is to remove it for a night or two and see if the snoring ceases.

Detergents – You might think that you are doing yourself a large favor by keeping your sheets cleaned regularly but if you are allergic to the detergent, it can cause a lot of problems. Try switching to a hypoallergenic detergent that is also for sensitive skin. You might be surprised to find out that the problem disappears soon after the switch is made.

With almost any type of allergy, it is a good idea for you to run a high quality air filter in your bedroom. After just one or two nights of running this filter, you should begin to notice a difference in the way that you sleep and how good you feel when you wake up.

An Ounce of Prevention Is Worth a Pound of Snore

Posted by admin On March - 17 - 2010

Snoring can be one of the more difficult things for us to overcome. Mainly, this is because very few of us realize that we snore unless we are told by someone that has to listen to it regularly. Snoring can not only be frustrating for those who are within earshot of us but it can also affect us negatively in many different ways. For example, if you snore regularly at night, you are not getting the good night sleep that you need. This can make you tired during the day and hurt your ability to concentrate and function properly. If you are able to get a snore free night, you will feel much better as a result.

The easiest way for you to overcome snoring is to prevent it in the first place. This may sound rather simplistic but you would be surprised with how much taking this logical step can really do. For example, if you are snoring because of allergens that exists in the bedroom, the easiest way for you to overcome the problem is to get rid of those allergens. Rather than trying to find a way to deal with them, removing them from the area may be the easiest way to help.

Two of the most common types of allergies include pet dander and hayfever. If you are snoring because you are allergic to your pet, the answer is actually fairly simple. Even though we may enjoy having a pet in the bedroom with us, removing them from the area is the easiest way for us to remove the snoring problem. We may also find that running a high quality air filter in the room will do a lot of good in this case. Another type of allergen is pollen which collects in our hair. Believe it or not, our hair acts like a pollen magnet during the day and if we do not wash the pollen out of our hair before going to sleep, we are in for a difficult night. The pollen will be transferred from our hair to our pillow slip and then breathed directly into our lungs.

Once we figure out why we are snoring in the first place, we need to take the next logical step of removing the source of the problem from the area. Once we are able to do this, we will find that we sleep much better and that everyone involved gets a better night’s sleep.

Unclog Your Sinuses and Stop Snoring

Posted by admin On March - 10 - 2010

When most of us think about our sinuses, we might think about the right area of our body but very few of us realize exactly what the sinuses too. The sinuses are large cavities that extend up beyond the area behind the eyebrows and out into the cheeks. Without our sinuses, our face would not have its unique shape and we would be at risk of harm due to damage to that area of our body which is now protected by these empty pockets. You might also be surprised to learn that your sinuses have a lot to do with whether you snore or not.

Although there are several different types of snoring that people do, one of the most common comes as a result of us breathing through our mouths due to our noses being clogged up. If you tend to wake up with a dry mouth and a stuffy nose, you are probably snoring for this very reason. If you want to overcome your snoring and sleep silently, the first step for you would be to unclog your sinuses. How can you do this?

The first step in unclogging your sinuses is finding out exactly why they are clogged in the first place. For most of us, this is a result of allergies that we may have which tend to be a little bit worse at night. The reason why this typically happens is because we breathe deeper at night and if the allergen exists in our bedroom, we are going to have a problem with it. Some of the most common types of allergies that we would find in this area would be pet allergies or perhaps allergies from pollen that has accumulated in our hair during the day.

The first step in unclogging your sinuses from these types of allergies is to do a sinus rinse on a regular basis. The easiest way for you to flush your sinuses in this manner is to use in a neti pot. You should also wash your hair before going to sleep every night and keep your sheets changed regularly. If you are having a problem with a pet allergy, banish the pet from the bedroom and you will sleep much better as a result. These are just a few methods but by clearing your sinuses, you will clear out the reasons why you snore.

Breathe Deeply and Silently at Night

Posted by admin On March - 2 - 2010

Most of us that have a difficult time with snoring don’t think that we have a difficult time breathing deeply at night. As a matter of fact, it may seem as though that we are breathing deeply whenever we are snoring but you would probably be surprised to find out that you are not getting enough air. A common way that we have of recognizing this is if we are dealing with sleep apnea. We may be taking very deep breaths that are rather noisy because of the snoring that we do but unfortunately, we have long periods of time between breaths where we are not breathing at all. This is not only a frustrating situation for those that have to listen to it, it is a potentially life threatening situation for those that have to deal with it.

In order for you to overcome your snoring, you might need to teach yourself how to breathe deeply while you’re not sleeping. There are plenty of breathing exercises that can be done which will strengthen them as part of your body and help you to be able to breathe deeply and efficiently. By teaching yourself how to do this during the day and exercising it regularly, you would be surprised with how much it will carry over into your sleep patterns. It also helps if you get other types of exercise as well but deep breathing exercises are an excellent place for you to start.

Another thing that you might want to consider is the fact that many of us tend to breathe through our mouths whenever we are sleeping and not through our nose. There are several things on the market right now which will help you to train yourself to breathe through your nose and that can reduce the amount of storing that you do considerably. They are typically cloth braces that are worn over the head and help to support the chin and keep it from dropping open while we are sleeping. Something that you may want to do while you are using one of these braces is to use a saline spray in your nostrils in order to help keep your sinuses clear. This will help you in two different ways. Not only will you be able to breathe through your nose while you’re sleeping, but your nasal passages will be clear enough that you will be able to do so comfortably.
